Analysis of Spoken Word Recognition 1
نویسندگان
چکیده
This study reports the analysis of incorrect responses from a spoken word recognition experiment of 1,428 words, designed to be a representative sample of the entire English lexicon. The stimuli were presented in six-talker babble to 193 normal-hearing listeners at three signal-to-noise ratios (0, 5, and 10 dB). The results reveal several patterns: (1) Errors tend to be of higher frequency than the target word, and response frequency is significantly correlated with target frequency; (2) Incorrect responses were very close to the target words in terms of number of phonemes and syllables, but had a mean edit distance of 3; and (3) NonWord responses were phonetically more similar to the target words than word responses. Implications for theories of spoken word recognition are discussed.

متن کاملCognitive predictors of improvements in adults' spoken word recognition six months after cochlear implant activation.
This study investigated whether cognitive measures obtained prior to cochlear implant surgery activation could predict improvements in spoken word recognition in adult cochlear implant recipients 6 months after activation. In addition to noncognitive factors identified by previous studies (i.e. younger age, shorter duration of hearing loss), the present results indicated that improvement in spo...
متن کاملAlpha and theta brain oscillations index dissociable processes in spoken word recognition
Slow neural oscillations (~1-15 Hz) are thought to orchestrate the neural processes of spoken language comprehension. However, functional subdivisions within this broad range of frequencies are disputed, with most studies hypothesizing only about single frequency bands. The present study utilizes an established paradigm of spoken word recognition (lexical decision) to test the hypothesis that w...
متن کاملEffects of Clustering Coefficient on Spoken Word Recognition
Since the late 1960’s, researchers have explored how the structure of the mental lexicon affects spoken word recognition. The proposal that words are recognized relationally in the context of other words in lexical memory has encouraged the use of complex systems to describe connectivity in both the phonological and semantic lexicon. The present study assessed the role of the graph theoretical ...
